Grounding for Health and Wellness: The Electrical Connection

Many of us are feeling increasingly untethered in this world. We are faced with endless to-do lists, demanding responsibilities pulling us in every direction, and news about every disaster and injustice across the globe. Even the devices that are supposed to make our lives easier disrupt us with their steady stream of notifications. Combined with our own expectations of how our lives are supposed to be, it is no surprise that most of us are feeling out of control and near the breaking point.

Excess mental tasks burn up the glucose in our brain and when that runs out, our body’s  reserves get tapped. The frantic running around drains off our energy even more. This leaves us feeling mentally and physically exhausted, as well as disconnected. The quality of our life and relationships deteriorate without the energy to engage.

There are many wellness techniques we can use to manage many of the demands that throw off our life’s balance. But we can also utilize some basic scientific knowledge of how our bodies function to achieve more physical and mental wellbeing.

Getting our bodies in contact with the ground is important for our overall health. Rubber-soled shoes, synthetic flooring and furniture, and living our lives elevated from the earth has disconnected us from the vital interaction with the ground that can help us achieve more physical balance.

Increasingly cut off from nature, our bodies are starving for the physical connection that grounding can provide us. The earth is an enormous reservoir of free electrons. Without  connection to the earth and these free electrons, the cells in our bodies are unable to balance the charge of our electron-deficient free radicals, causing oxidative stress and disease.

In addition, electromagnetic radiation from our devices and through the airwaves induces voltages in our bodies. These voltages disrupt the trillions of subtle electrical communications that operate the systems within our bodies. Grounding reduces these induced voltages.

Eating antioxidant rich foods and drinking living water can help balance our systems. But grounding our bodies to the earth allows healthy energetic exchange on an electrical as well as subtle energy level.

How to ground for health and wellness:

  • Find a place in nature, away from civilization if you are lucky
  • Find a patch of grass under a tree or touch some potted plants
  • Take off your shoes and socks, and spread your toes to touch the earth
  • Sink your feet into the grass or moving water, or walk slowly and be mindful of your body
  • Lean against a tree, lay in a meadow or on the beach and let as much of your body touch the ground as possible
  • Even walking barefoot or sitting on the floor in your home can provide more direct contact through the structure of your home and into the earth
  • Breathe deeply, slowly and rhythmically
  • Clear your mind and let your thoughts drift away

Whenever you are able, silence your notifications or turn off your devices altogether. Allow yourself a few minutes to just be. Remember that being relaxed and content is our birthright and how we were meant to be.

We are beings, not doings. The earth can help us find that healthy and happy state of being.
